Chapter 1 – Balfour

The forest was quiet. The chill of the night still hung between the trunks and tendrils of mist swirled on the forest floor, making everything seem surreal and magical. I took a deep breath, sucking the icy air into my lungs. It was good to get away from the keep for a change. Since I’d been inaugurated as Haden Gray’s replacement I’d been swallowed by work and responsibilities.

Amber stood next to me and I could feel her like a gentle, supportive presence. I hadn’t seen her a lot, either. It felt like I’d been consumed by my new position.

“I love it out here,” she said. I nodded. Being out in the woods was in my nature as a werewolf and I missed being able to let the wolf loose. I hadn’t had a chance just to run wild outside of full moon.

It had been an honor to be chosen as their leader. I had been the alpha of the pack for a while and I knew what leading was all about, what it felt like when you had so many lives in your hands, but this was different. This was on a whole new scale. I didn’t only have a pack of werewolves to look after now, but humans, witches, fae and vampires, too.

“You can shift, you know,” Amber said, turning to me. “I know you want to. Need to.”

I stepped closer to her and put my hand on her cheek. Her skin was warm. Her white hair hung to her hips and she had flames in her eyes, I could feel the fire burning in every part of her, but still she was my stability. She leaned into my touch and smiled.

“What did I do to deserve you?” I asked.

She rolled her eyes at my cliché but she was smiling. I smiled, too, kissed her and then stepped back. I needed to shift, she was right. I got rid of my clothes and left them in a pile on the ground. Amber’s eyes were on mine. I couldn’t tell what she was thinking – if she was worried or nervous or something else.

I closed my eyes and focused on the animal inside me, shutting out the world. It lifted its head, as if it had been sleeping deeply and I’d woken it up. It shook itself out, stretched and yawned. I’d been neglecting my wolf. Being the leader of the entire preternatural community had given me enough power that I could subdue the wolf completely. It was almost like being human. I should have made more time for the animal.

I was still finding balance.

The shift came on slowly. I wasn’t used to it anymore. Shifting within seconds was a muscle you had to exercise or, like with anything else, you lost it. The animal took its form gradually and I was aware of everything that happened throughout the metamorphosis. My bones popped out and shifted under my skin, building a new skeleton. Hair sprouted on my skin, covering me and I curled in a ball on the ground to make the transition easier.
